The Ogdensburg Blue Devils and the Massena Red Raiders met for the 3rd time this season in the Section 10 overall championship game. OFA won the first 2 meetings by 13 points the first game and 20 points the second. The first quarter was a fast paced high scoring affair. Each team traded baskets back and forth and finished the quarter in a 20-20 tie. The second quarter was all Massena. The Massena defense held OFA scoreless for the first 6 minutes of the quarter and led by as many as 14 at one point. The halftime score was 38-26. Coach Merna must have had a persuasive talk with his team at halftime because the Blue Devils came out with something to prove in the 3rd quarter. OFA went on a 15-2 run to regain the lead 41-40 with 4:21 remaining in the quarter. The rest of the game was very close. OFA seemed to have control of the game, but the Red Raiders would not lie down. Jordan Ahnert made a huge 3-pointer with 1:32 left in regulation to tie the game 59-59. Neither team would score another point in he rest of regulation play sending the game into overtime. In the overtime period, Gene Bouyer made 2 free throws at the 2:11 mark to give OFA a 61-59 lead. Massena scored the next 4 points in the game for a 63-61 lead. With 12.3 seconds left in overtime, Tom Kelso was fouled and stepped up to the free throw line for 2 shots. Even with Coach Miller using the timeout in between shots to try to ice the big man, he nailed them both to tie the game at 63-63. Massena started to take the ball up court when Jon Garvey poked the ball away and right into the hands of Mr. Bouyer who knew exactly what to do with it. Take it to the hoop and score. That is just what he did. The Blue Devils win 65-53 claiming their 5th straight Section 10 overall championship once again in dramatic fashion. Gene led the Blue Devils with 24 points and 8 rebounds. Tom Kelso had 14 points and 15 rebounds including those 2 clutch free throw down the stretch. Jon Garvey had 10 points and 3 rebounds. Zach Dodge scored 8 points and pulled down 4 rebounds for OFA. Senior Mike Luckie only scored 6 points with 2 3 point shots, but each one of them were huge and seemed to pump up his team when they needed it most. Garrett Sharlow led the Red Raiders with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Cody Clary played a excellent game against the tough defense of Gene Bouyer and added 19 points and 4 rebounds for Massena. Congratulations to both teams for another well-played entertaining game in the finals. Good luck in state competition.
